About Bethune-Cookman University

Bethune - Cookman University, simply known as B - CU, is a private historical black university, located in Daytona Beach, FL, which was founded in 1904, under the name of Bethune Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls, by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who was an American educator and a renowned civil rights leader.


In 1941, the school became a 4-year college, with the approval of the Florida Board of Education, allowing the founding of a 4-year baccalaureate program in Liberal Arts and Teacher Education.


The name of "Bethune-Cookman University" was approved by the Board of Trustees, on February 14, 2007, after the institution's first graduate program was established.


The academic program offered at B - CU is offered through 7 different schools, which are: the School of Arts & Humanities, School of Business, School of Education, School of Nursing, School of Graduate & Professional Studies, School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics and School of Social Sciences.


The B - CU Athletic teams participate in the NCAA Division 1-AA, the university being a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, sponsoring sports areas such as baseball, basketball, bowling, football and volleyball. The Wildcats have won a total of 29 MEAC titles, including 13 in baseball, 3 in football, 5 in softball and 1 in men's cross country.

Facts & Short history of Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach City is Part of Volusia County, located in Florida, USA, with a population estimated at over 60 000 inhabitants. Archaeological investigations suggest that the first inhabitants of the area were the Timucuan Indians, who were later decimated by war and diseases.


Daytona City was founded in 1870, being incorporated as a city 6 years later, being named after Matthias D. Day, which is the founder of the city. The name of "Daytona Beach" was settled in 1926, when Daytona City, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze were merged under one name, on the demand of civic leader J.B. Kahn.


The city has a warm climate during the entire year, the annual average temperature being of around 80°F. Daytona Beach generally experiences a mild climate, with pleasant ocean breezes, the average annual precipitations being 48 inches.
